The Ludwigsfeld settlement in the Munich district of Feldmoching

The Ludwigsfeld settlement is located in the Feldmoching district of Munich and gained grim notoriety as the Allach subcamp. This subcamp was part of an extensive system in which various external command units of the Dachau concentration camp played a role. On the site, which covers approximately 14 hectares, forced laborers and prisoners were housed. Among other things, the forced laborers were employed in the construction of aircraft engines.

On April 30, 1945, US soldiers reached the Allach subcamp. They used the camp to house displaced persons who were to be repatriated to their home countries. However, this was an extremely difficult task, as many people, for political or other reasons, simply did not want to return to their old homeland.

Accordingly, a permanent settlement was established in the eastern part of the camp in the 1950s. Funds from the Marshall Plan, for example, were used for this purpose. The new settlement was designed for 3,800 people.

The streets of the new settlement were named after gemstones, so the settlement is still partially known today as the “Crystal Settlement” or “Diamond Settlement.”

Today, around 20 different nationalities live together in harmony in the Ludwigsfeld settlement. Among the residents are still 140 former forced laborers as well as many of their children and grandchildren. Today, the Ludwigsfeld settlement is regarded as an example of very successful integration. In total, around 3,500 people live in Ludwigsfeld today.
