The Angerviertel (Anger Quarter) is named after the Anger, a village green that was initially located in the area of today’s St. Jakob’s Square. An Anger is essentially an open square. However, the quarter wasn’t always called Angerviertel. Its original name was “Rindermarktviertel” (Cattle Market Quarter), as the former cattle market was located there. The Rindermarkt Fountain by Josef Henselmann still commemorates this market. There is also a street called Rindermarkt.
At times, the district was also named after captains. For example, in the 15th century it was sometimes called “Hans Pütrich’s Quarter” or “Rudolf’s Quarter”.
The Hackenviertel and the Angerviertel now form Munich’s southern Old Town. In the Middle Ages, these two districts belonged to the parish of St. Peter.
The shape of the Anger district is interesting, as it resembles a hook. Petersbergl hill sits in the center, on the beautiful old town terrace. To the east and south, two rather narrow strips extend onto the Hirschau terrace. The Hirschau terrace was formerly traversed by city streams.
In earlier times, the Anger district was primarily inhabited by merchants and craftsmen. They mainly used the water power generated by the city’s streams for their respective businesses.
