North of Eggenfelder Straße, midway between Zamilapark and the attractive Steinhausen housing estate, lies the so-called Colonial Settlement. It measures approximately 650 meters wide (east-west) and 350 meters long (north-south), covering an area of roughly 23 hectares. The Colonial Settlement also includes an allotment garden complex of about 3 hectares, located southeast of the area.
The colonial settlement was built in 1934; its earlier name was “Zamdorf Unemployed Settlement.” Numerous streets are named after colonial pioneers and African expedition members. For example, there is a Rohlfs Street (in honor of Gerhard Rohlfs) and an Emin Pasha Street (in honor of Eduard Schnitzer, who served as Emin Pasha in Sudan and was also its governor). In 1935, the settlement was renamed the Colonial Settlement. It is also known as the African Settlement.
