The padlock “Iron Rock”

The development of the “Iron Rock” padlock in the forge in the basement of August Bremicker’s home in the mid-1920s was groundbreaking for the company’s success. At a time when locks were often still unwieldy or easy to pick, the “Iron Rock” set new standards in terms of robustness and durability. The product laid the foundation for the company’s reputation as a quality manufacturer. Soon the capacities in the basement were no longer sufficient, and the first factory was built.

Expansion and internationalization

After the Second World War, ABUS managed to quickly master the resurgence. In the 1950s, the range was massively expanded. A decisive milestone was the opening of the production site in Rehe (Westerwald) in 1957. To this day, this location is a centerpiece of production and houses, among other things, the modern research and development center, which is also known as ABUS’ “think tank”.

Internationalization began increasingly in the 1970s and 80s. ABUS recognized early on that security is a global need. Today, the group of companies has around 30 branches worldwide, including in Europe, America and Asia. Despite this global presence, ABUS remains a family-owned company that is now run by the fourth and fifth generation and is strongly rooted in its German locations.

The three main pillars of success

In order to cover the complex requirements of modern preventive safety technology, ABUS has divided its portfolio into three strategic business areas:

1. Home security

This area includes everything that secures the home. ABUS is considered the market leader for mechanical and electronic solutions in this area:

  • Door and window security: From armoured bolts to additional window locks, ABUS offers mechanical resistance that makes life difficult for burglars.
  • Locking systems: Modern door cylinders (such as the XP20 or Bravus series) combine precision mechanics with copy protection.
  • Hazard detectors: These include networked smoke detectors, heat detectors and CO detectors that save lives in an emergency.
  • Smart Home: With systems such as “wAppLoxx” or the “Smart Privest”, ABUS integrates mechanical security into the digital world.

2. Mobile Security

In this segment, ABUS is known worldwide for its bicycle locks and helmets.

  • Two-wheeler locks: The legendary U-lock was significantly shaped by ABUS. Today, the range includes folding locks (the BORDO series), chain locks and innovative app-controlled SmartX locks that do not require a physical key.
  • Helmets: ABUS produces high-quality bicycle helmets for popular sports through to professional cycling (sponsorship of teams such as Movistar).
  • Motorcycle safety: Brake disc locks with integrated alarm system protect high-quality machines from theft.

3. Property security

Here, the focus is on commercial customers, authorities and industry.

  • Access control: Electronic locking systems allow precise control over who is allowed to enter which building and when.
  • Video surveillance: State-of-the-art camera systems (IP and analogue) and recording solutions provide end-to-end control of business premises.
  • Alarm systems: Hybrid alarm systems secure large areas both mechanically and electronically.

Innovations “Made in Germany”

An essential factor for survival against cheap competition from the Far East is consistent investment in research and development. In the ABUS test centre, products are subjected to the toughest loads:

  • Cold tests: Locks must also function perfectly at minus 20 degrees Celsius.
  • Tensile and torsion tests: Mechanical components are subjected to forces of several tons to withstand break-in attempts.
  • Digitalisation: ABUS has made the leap into the digital age. Cloud-based security solutions and the use of Bluetooth encryption for locks show the future viability of the company.

Social responsibility and brand

ABUS is more than just a hardware manufacturer. The company is strongly involved in prevention work. In close cooperation with the police and insurance companies, ABUS provides information about burglary protection. The brand enjoys an extremely high level of trust. Studies (such as “Brand of the Century”) regularly confirm that consumers immediately associate the name ABUS with the attribute “safety”.

Sustainability is also playing a growing role. Through the durability of the products – many locks are in use for decades – ABUS sets a counterpoint to the throwaway society. In addition, increased attention is paid to resource-saving processes in production at German sites.
