The forend is the end plate of a lock, attached to the front edge of the door leaf. To allow the latch and bolt to extend from the lock, the forend has a recess for the latch and a recess for the bolt. The strike plate attached to the door frame also has recesses for the latch and bolt.

A forend is either rectangular or oval. It is made of metal and, for aesthetic reasons, is usually the same color as the door leaf.
