The Baumkirchen district is located in the Berg am Laim borough of Munich and originated as a settlement in or before the 9th century, as the parish village was first documented in 870. The name at that time was “ad Pouminunchirihum,” which means something like “church built from tree trunks.” However, another possible meaning could be “church surrounded by trees.”

Since July 1, 1913, Baumkirchen has been part of the Bavarian capital city of Munich. On that day, Berg am Laim was incorporated into Munich.
