Bernd Eichinger Square is located in Munich’s Maxvorstadt district and generally refers to the area in front of the entrance to the University of Television and Film. Nearby are not only the Pinakotheken art museums, but also Gabelsbergerstrasse, Barer Strasse, Prinz-Ludwig-Strasse, Brienner Strasse, and Arcisstrasse. The square is named after the famous film producer Bernd Eichinger, who died in 2011.
Bernd Eichinger’s widow, Katja Eichinger, proposed to the city of Munich that a square be named after her late husband. The green space in front of the University of Television and Film was chosen for this purpose. Eichinger himself had studied at this university. Both the university and Markus Söder, the Bavarian Finance Minister, agreed to the idea. The naming ceremony was officially held in April 2012.
