The Graggenau district is located in Munich’s beautiful old town and is named after the Graggenau area. Graggenau is simply a field name. The area was also known as “Grakkaw” in 1325 and as “Gragkenawe” a year or two later. Linguists believe that this name derives from the word “Krack,” which means raven or crow.
The Graggenau Quarter was first documented in a historical record. However, it wasn’t recorded as Graggenau, but rather as the Wilbrecht Quarter. At that time, the area was named after the captain who held sway there.
Other names for the quarter include “Hansen’s Bart’s Quarter” (1420/1421), “Sharptooth’s Quarter” (1433), and again “Wilbrecht’s Quarter” (1439). The other quarters in Munich’s Old Town were also occasionally named after their captains.
Together with the Kreuzviertel, the Graggenau district now forms Munich’s northern Old Town. In the Middle Ages, it comprised the territory of the women’s parish.
The Graggenau district is particularly characterized by the beautiful ducal buildings of the Old Court and the Munich Residenz.
