The Hackenviertel district in Munich’s old town

Former Hundskugel restaurant in Munich’s Hackenviertel district
The Hackenviertel is located in Munich’s beautiful old town and derives its name from the field name “in dem Haggen” (in the hedge). The area was first mentioned in 1326. However, it was then limited to the area of today’s streets Altheimer Eck, Brunnstraße, Damenstiftstraße, Hackenstraße, and Hotterstraße. The name “in dem Haggen” refers to an enclosed area.
At Altheimer Eck in the Hackenviertel, the settlement of Altheim was formerly located, which was incorporated into the second ring of the city walls. Even today, a bend in the road indicates that Altheim was only later integrated.
Originally, the area now known as Hackenviertel was called “Kramenviertel” (Grammar Quarter). This name was first recorded in 1363. Even today, historians are trying to clarify the exact meaning of this name. The upper Kramen (general stores) were located on the south side of Marienplatz at that time, not in the “Kramenviertel.” It is possible that the name referred to other general stores that were located in what is now the Kramenviertel.
At certain times, the Hackenviertel was also named after its captains. For example, in 1420/1421 it was called “Lorenz Schrencken’s Quarter” and in 1445 “Schrencken’s Quarter.”
Together with the Angerviertel, the Hackenviertel now forms the southern part of Munich’s Old Town. In the Middle Ages, it comprised the parish of St. Peter.
In the Middle Ages, the Hackenviertel was primarily inhabited by merchants. There were relatively few aristocratic residences here, and the buildings were generally more understated.
