In the year 822, a chapel was mentioned, which belonged to a royal estate. The last king of the Carolingians, Louis the Child, transferred this estate to the Bishop of Freising in 903.
The former name of this area, Küntal or Chüntal (meaning King’s Valley), points to the aforementioned royal estate. From the first half of the 15th century, the place was finally called ‘sannd Haymran’ (St. Emmeram). A mill is already documented in St. Emmeram in the 14th century.
When the community was formed in 1818, the settlement of Saint Emmeram was assigned to the municipality of Oberföhring. The incorporation into Munich then took place in 1913.
