Theresienhöhe is primarily located in the Munich district of Schwanthalerhöhe and is best known for the Bavaria statue and the adjacent Hall of Fame, which were built according to designs by the famous architect Leo von Klenze. The Bavariapark was also created around the Bavaria statue.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Gabriel von Seidl conceived the idea of designing an additional exhibition park, which was inaugurated in 1908 with a ceremony to mark the 750th anniversary of the city of Munich.
In 1920, the German Trade Exhibition Munich was held on the grounds for the first time. The German Transport Exhibition took place there in 1925, and another large transport exhibition was held in 1953. Finally, the first World Transport Exhibition was held there in 1965.
A wrestling hall was built for the 1972 Summer Olympics. The grounds were continuously expanded until the 1990s with the addition of further halls. Some of these exhibition halls are now listed as historical monuments, just like Bavariapark itself.
Unfortunately, in 1998, the former exhibition grounds suffered a setback when Messe München (Munich Trade Fair) relocated to the new Riem trade fair center. So the site was repurposed and released for housing construction. The location wasn’t bad, and still isn’t, in the immediate vicinity of the Theresienwiese.
The relatively new district now covers an area of over 47 hectares. Nearly 1,500 apartments have already been built. In addition, approximately 5,000 jobs have been created in Theresienhöhe.
