Replacing or repairing a lock – example: gate door
24. July 2025
Installation of a new door edge bolt from the brand manufacturer Fuhr in the existing grille of a double-leaf patio door.
A broken lock offers no protection!
While a decorative grille on a patio door is certainly an attractive addition to a house, if the lock hasn’t worked for years, as in the case described here, it’s of little use. It won’t deter any burglars. At some point during an attempt to close the door, the lower locking rod, which secures the lock to the floor, came to rest outside the recess, and the resulting force destroyed the internal components of the locking mechanism. Therefore, only a new lock could remedy the situation.
Threaded rods, lock case & cylinder replaced
The locking rods are two threaded rods that are screwed into the threads on the top and bottom of the door bolt. When locked, the rods engage in the recess in the floor at the bottom and in the door frame at the top, thus blocking one of the two door leaves. Although the lock manufacturer was identical, the thread diameter no longer matched, so the rods also had to be replaced and cut to the correct length. The lock itself was showing its age – partly due to weathering – so it was time to switch to a modern, significantly more robust model – a so-called government-issued lock with an Abus cylinder.
Drilling, thread cutting, grinding – a wide range of metalworking skills were required to get everything just right! We’d be happy to advise you on replacing or repairing a lock. It’s essential that a lock works properly so that only authorized individuals can gain access. Whether you’re in Eichenau, Maisach or Germering If you are at home, we look forward to your call!
