More residential burglaries in Germany again!

The Federal Criminal Police Office has been reporting higher numbers of residential burglaries year after year since 2021, with a declining clearance rate.
According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, the number of residential burglaries in Germany continued to rise in 2025 and reached a total of 82,920 registered cases, the highest level in recent years. After a significant decline to around 54,000 cases was recorded during the Corona pandemic – especially in 2021 – the numbers have been rising continuously since then. Already in 2023 and 2024, the values were significantly higher again, and the trend is now continuing. The statistics include both completed burglaries and criminal attempts.
Parallel to this increase, the clearance rate remains at a low level and has recently fallen even further. In 2025, only 14.1% of cases could be solved. Conversely, this means that in about six out of seven cases, no perpetrators can be identified. Despite slightly fluctuating values in recent years, the overall clearance rate is constantly in the range of around 14 to 19%, which underlines the difficult investigative work in this area of crime.
A look at the suspects shows a clear picture: the vast majority are male, and the majority of the perpetrators belong to the age group of adults aged 21 and over. Younger suspects – i.e. adolescents and adolescents – are represented, but make up only a comparatively small share. Children under the age of 14 hardly play a role statistically.
A special feature of the police crime statistics is also striking: In the area of residential burglary, no victims in the classic sense are recorded. Instead, the statistics focus exclusively on the number of cases and the suspects identified. This means that the actual impact of persons – such as psychological stress or material damage – is not reflected in this evaluation.
Overall, there is a clear trend: the number of burglaries is rising again, while the clearance rate remains comparatively low. Against this background, the topic of prevention is becoming increasingly important, as the probability of identifying a perpetrator afterwards is relatively low.
